The word “dashiki” has roots in the Yoruba language. It means “underwear”. The Yoruba used dashikis as a undergarment for larger robes. They were sewed from hand-woven strips of cloth. For example, white was used to symbolize a groom’s attire for his wedding day and purple was worn for royalty. The dashiki was adapted in America during the Black Power and Civil Rights movements in the 1960s. It gained popularity among African American youth and was adopted as a symbol of Black pride by the counterculture movement. This caused it to lose its original meaning as a symbol of African identity. Whites who adopted the African print shirt as a fashion item diluted its significance and it lost some of its political potency.

Dashikis are still a staple in the African American community, especially during celebrations of Africa’s rich heritage and history. The popular 2018 movie, “Black Panther”, reenergized interest in African fashion like the traditional print dashiki. Dashikis have been seen in movies, mentioned in print, and worn by famous people all over the world.

Traditionally, dashikis are worn by African-American men. But in recent years, they’ve been adapted for women too. Some dashikis are tailored and sold as women’s clothes, while others are available in women’s section of clothing stores. The dashiki is a good fit for both casual and dressy occasions.

However, the dashiki is an unmistakably African garment, and its roots are as deep as the afro hairstyles of its wearers. It is a symbol of the pride and legacy of those whose ancestors were taken from their homeland by force and who have had to overcome many obstacles in order to live in America with dignity and freedom.
